After eight extremely long years, justice has finally been seen for the vervet monkey so terribly mutilated. To say that the unmitigated amputation of three limbs of a healthy animal, found at her home in severe pain, was unprofessional conduct by Dr Elfrede Alberts at the end of 2012, is an understatement.
Now that she has (finally) been confirmed guilty in court, it is time for the South African Veterinary Council to take action against her, which, astoundingly, has been deferred until the case was over.
This person should never again be permitted to work with, or on, non-human beings again. At the very least, we look forward to seeing her name struck from the SAVC register so that she can no longer practice as a vet.
